About the Society

Founded in 2010, the mission of the Societas Daemonetica is threefold:

First and foremost, our mission is to expand the study of Hell, the Devil, and all "things demonic" in the Medieval and Early Modern periods: from latrine-dwelling ghouls in Old Norse literature, to representations of the fires of Hell on cathedral facades; from the appearance of comic devils on the early Elizabethan stage to theological debates on the corporeality of hellfire; the study of these cultural, aesthetic, philosophical, and theological elements reveals new and interesting insights into a shared heritage.

Second, our mission is to make use of the interdisciplinarity such a focus on a single subject matter can provide, to allow scholars who work in different fields and with different methodologies to learn from one another, in a shared space of mutual cooperation.

Third, our mission is to bring new and rising scholars in the field into conversation with more established voices, to ensure the continuity of our chosen discourse into the future.

The Society proposes sessions each year at the major Medieval conferences in Kalamazoo, MI (USA) and Leeds (UK). For more information contact societas.-NOSPAM-daemonetica@gmail.com (removing the "-NOSPAM-" tag.)
